As an extra treat, here’s a sneak peek of Sherlock’s first impression of Stan!
Sherlock looked this man up and down, reading his entire life in a matter of seconds. Late twenties to early thirties. His complexion and facial structure suggested Irish descent, probably second or third generation. Traces of dog hair along his trouser leg, which was slightly rumpled in a rushed attempt to lint roll it away. That indicated there used to be a lot of it, hastily cleaned after being alerted to an out-of-the-blue mission. It was a German shepherd, easily identified by the coloration and amount of hair that used to be present.
This agent came from a military family, his attentive stance suggested that, but due to his longer, casual hairstyle and frankly soft and innocent eyes, it was doubtful he’d ever really served.
For good measure, Sherlock noticed a slight bump on the man’s sternum under his maroon button-down, one which he had a habit of smoothing down absently. It was important to him. The detective caught a glimpse of a silver chain peeking out under the agent’s collar, so it was a necklace, but upon reviewing the shape of the bump, Sherlock found that it was no pendant.
It was a ring. More specifically, it was a ring that would fit this man’s fourth finger. Considering the lengths to which the agent went to hide the ring from his likely traditionally-valued family and kept it hidden out of habit but close to this heart, Sherlock could only assume a secret engagement, presumably with another man since he was the recipient of the ring.
It took Sherlock less than half a minute to pick the man apart, and he didn’t even know his name.
Agent Stan Baker is a character that will be introduced in the second official story of Brothers Consulted, and he’s taken off on us!
You can find out a bit more about him here, and he appears in the excerpts here, here and here. Keep an eye out for him in future snippets and stories! Stan is here to stay!
Based on the prompts Glance from this list of 100 one-word prompts, and Dollhouse from this similar list of G/t themed prompts from @nightmares06 and @bee-wrecker respectively. Finally getting around to these!
It had been going so well for Zepheera.
There were only two humans in the small flat, one of them a child. For six months, Zepheera had been living comfortably in their walls, and for nearly seventy years of fighting to survive, she trusted herself to keep hidden and make this home last for once.
And all it had taken was a glance from the child to ruin it all.
Desperate for any kind of barrier between herself and the human, she ducked into the child’s dollhouse. Any human was bad news for a borrower like Zepheera, but children were frightfully unpredictable and prone to grabbing and playing. At 68 years old, even with the body of a young adult, Zepheera was not in the mood for any of that nonsense.
The ground trembled beneath Zepheera as the child approached. Even a little girl, nine years old and much smaller than any adult human, greatly outsized the four and a half inch tall woman cornered in the dollhouse. As the child drew closer, Zepheera could clearly hear each and every breath rushing in and out of lungs larger than the room the borrower had made her prison.
“Hello?”
The little girl’s voice was mercifully light, a quiet rumble that washed over Zepheera through the plastic wall her back was pressed against. A wide blue eye peered in through one window, causing the borrower to jump and dart into the next room. Her eyes flashed frantically around for an exit, regretting her choice of hiding place, especially as the girl shifted outside.
With a loud click and a rush of air, half the dollhouse swung open. Zepheera was left exposed, blinking through the sudden light up at a gigantic child.
The human’s head tilted, brow pinched as she sat back on her heels. “Did I scare ya?” she inquired.
Zepheera frowned, realizing that it wasn’t curiosity that made the girl pursue her anymore, but concern. Those blue eyes, each the size of Zepheera’s head, were filled with it.
Bemused, Zepheera shook her head no.
The blonde girl’s shoulders slumped in relief. “Good. Why’dja run away, then, if you weren’t scared? How come you’re so small? What’s your name? I’m Rose!”
Zepheera’s brow lifted at the bombardment of curious questions. Maybe, if she played her cards right, she wouldn’t have to move out just yet.
“I ran because I was nervous,” said Zepheera, peeling herself from the wall sheepishly. “It’s my first day, you see, being an imaginary friend. I’m Zepheera.”
Sketchie of bitty Zepheera holding her baby brother Kernel for @borrowedtimeandspace. X3 Cuties. (Kernel should probably be slightly bigger but shhhhh. Smol bab.)
I found Zepheera’s pretty quickly, in John Barrowman Swings Cole Porter. If you don’t know, Cole Porter was a famous composer and songwriter in the early 1900s, when Zepheera would have been growing up. This is another heartbreaking one, whether you’re thinking of her and the Doctor or her and Orrick, her former husband. This is “After You, Who”.
I had a bit of fun with Stan, who’s an energetic yet focused and determined spitfire of an agent who will fight like hell for what he loves and believes in. His song is “The Arena” by Lindsey Stirling (music video in the link). The violin definitely fits in with the Sherlock theme!
Moriarty is hard to find a serious one for. Then again, the meme is for “songs I associate with the character” so… I picked Burn from Hamilton xD All from that one line, it really has no association otherwise
I don’t think it would ever happen in canon, but I am always down for noncanon prompts! Even if I’m behind on the ones I already have, which are coming along, I promise.
Honestly, I’d never thought of a situation like that. Zepheera’s mother Klerida is a fiery spirit and certainly wouldn’t be an exception to the trend of the Doctor getting slapped by his companion’s mothers. His poor cheek!
But man, would he be honored to meet Zeph’s dad. He’s a much gentler soul than Klerida, but also determined and the incurable optimist. They’d definitely get along if given enough time together.
Who knows, this might pop up as a drabble one day. Thanks for the idea!
@nightmares06 tagged me forever and ever ago, and I ought to be putting content on this here blog of mine ^^; So here we go!
Rules: Post these rules. Post 8 facts about your character. Tag 8 other characters. Post their names along with their creators’ avatars.
1. Stan (full name: Stanley Aaron Baker) is a pseudo-freelance agent who works alongside John Watson, Sherlock Holmes, and Sam and Dean Winchester in Brothers Consulted, my collab with nightmares06.
2. His character took us both by surprise. He was initially just going to be some suit to get the boys from A to B, but his personality shone out of nowhere and now he’s here to stay!
3. He is 27 years old and 6′ even, the closest in age to Dean out of the Baker Street crew.
4. Against the odds, he and Dean Winchester hit it off when they first meet, immediately developing an easygoing yet playful rapport that puts them both at ease when interacting with someone so different in size.
5. Stan is Irish by descent, but he was born and raised in London. He and his family in Ireland are close, so occasionally a bit of the accent will slip into his speech when he’s not thinking about it.
6. Much of Stan’s family served in the military. He grew up formally and informally training in combat with his elders, even his older brothers, but never served himself. Even so, he is a natural born leader and he carries a militaristic air when he’s on a job that requires those skills.
7. Though he keeps it a secret from the more conservative members of his family, Stan is engaged to his long-term partner. His fiancee’s name is Nathan Sullivan, and though he is a civilian, Stan keeps him up to speed on the less confidential aspects of his work. He knows Nathan would never betray him.
8. Stan and Nathan own a German shepherd. Her name is Juno and she sheds a lot and they love her.
