So…I have a lot of soundtracks in my library, especially from tv shows and movies I love. I can’t help it, I’m a music nerd.
The first song that came up in the shuffle was “There’s That Smile”, a song from the Series 8 soundtrack from Doctor Who, and somehow I felt that it was incredibly appropriate for Nate. It’s incredibly romantic, but just a touch off-kilter to let you know that things aren’t quite normal. It tricks you into thinking it’s a waltz when it’s not, and there’s an underlying touch of danger that I feel could be implicit of his connection to Stan, whose life is full of it. This was definitely a surprising find!
Fun fact 1: I did check and the next two songs after this one in the shuffle were love-related xD
Fun fact 2: for any music theory nerds, I think this song is in 8/8 time. Idk i get really excited about music theory xD
Have I mentioned how much I love this meme? cuz I really really do
Only two songs into the shuffle and I ended up on “No Way” by Darren Criss from A Very Potter Sequel. It’s a high-energy group number between Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Draco, full of determination to fight the battle and win it. I imagine this is the attitude Stan has going into a mission.
4. Movie Music – Zepheera and Orrick enjoy a rare night to themselves.
I know i’m kind of cheating because Reasons. I couldn’t pick any one movie, and I’ve been wanting to do this for ages, fight me.
“I can’t believe you talked me into this,” Zepheera sighed as she watched Orrick fiddle with the dial of a radio taller than the both of them.
“I’m telling you,” he called over the muddled chatter of the rapidly shifting channels, “the humans all left with suitcases earlier. I doubt they’ll be back any time tonight.”
He gave a triumphant laugh when he found a station that excited him. A lively band played a jumpy tune that completely distracted Zepheera from her previous qualms.
Then Orrick took her hands and tugged her toward the open space in front of the radio, and they came flooding back. “I-I don’t really dance,” she warned.
Orrick’s smile softened his bright blue eyes and instantly Zepheera felt her worries melt away. “Don’t worry. Just follow my lead.”
Zepheera was still uncertain and a little stiff for the first song or two, but it was impossible to deny Orrick’s enthusiasm. He spun her around a few times and led her through a few social dances she’d never had the chance to see before.
Just when she was really starting to enjoy herself, the song changed. Rather than a brass band, this one started off slow and simple with strings and a lone flute. The melody wafted in, and Zepheera found that she recognized it. A distant memory from when she was twelve came roaring back. There was a play on the radio, and she distantly remembered this song being played in the part of it that she got to listen to through the walls. That had been about a decade ago…
Orrick startled her out of her reverie by taking her hand. He gently pulled her closer and placed her hand on his shoulder. His found her waist and free hand, and he quietly told her which foot to move in time with the music.
“Where’d you learn to dance like this?” asked Zepheera, now that things had quieted down.
Orrick grinned his most charming grin. “The old beans back home were dancers. My sisters couldn’t resist watching, and always wanted me to be their partner. Sort of had to learn, and obviously I never forgot.”
“I think it’s sweet,” Zepheera smiled, deep violet eyes shining.
As the song played on, the melody passing from violins to a crooning horn, Orrick continued to guide Zepheera through the waltz. She gradually loosened up and became comfortable enough with the steps that she could look up into Orrick’s eyes rather than her feet. They hardly seemed to pay the world any mind when the soft, tremulous voice of a woman joined the orchestra.
Someday I’ll find you / Moonlight behind you / True to the dream I am dreaming…
Zepheera and Orrick’s waltz slowed, and he wrapped an arm to coax her closer as they made this decision in tandem.
As I draw near you, you’ll smile a little smile…
The borrowers held each other as their dance shifted into a swaying embrace. “I loved this song as a kid,” Zepheera sighed, resting her head on Orrick’s chest. His heartbeat soothed her.
For a little while / We shall stand / Hand in hand…
“It could be ours,” Orrick suggested, lacing his fingers between hers. “We’ll borrow it, you and me…”
I’ll leave you never / Love you forever / All our past sorrow redeeming…
Zepheera’s eyes fluttered shut, a tear trickling down her cheek as Orrick and the singer’s words sank in. “I’d like that.”
Make it all come true / Make me love you too / Someday I’ll find you again…
Zepheera and Orrick’s song: “Someday I’ll Find You” by Noel Coward
I found Zepheera’s pretty quickly, in John Barrowman Swings Cole Porter. If you don’t know, Cole Porter was a famous composer and songwriter in the early 1900s, when Zepheera would have been growing up. This is another heartbreaking one, whether you’re thinking of her and the Doctor or her and Orrick, her former husband. This is “After You, Who”.
I had a bit of fun with Stan, who’s an energetic yet focused and determined spitfire of an agent who will fight like hell for what he loves and believes in. His song is “The Arena” by Lindsey Stirling (music video in the link). The violin definitely fits in with the Sherlock theme!
Moriarty is hard to find a serious one for. Then again, the meme is for “songs I associate with the character” so… I picked Burn from Hamilton xD All from that one line, it really has no association otherwise
