Zepheera smiled faintly as she watched the
Doctor make conversation with the woman he’d thought would never return to his
life again, who had been locked away in a parallel universe for years. The
woman that, though he never told her or the borrower he’d confessed all this
to, he’d loved.
Needless to say, neither of them ever
expected Rose Tyler to show up. Then, of course, the Earth was stolen and the
sky rained down with Daleks, and she showed up in the nick of time to join in
the fight.
So many familiar faces returned that night,
but hers was the one that captured the Doctor’s undivided attention.
Not that Zepheera was complaining, but she
was beginning to feel a little forgotten sitting on the monitor on the TARDIS
console while the two of them got caught up. She cleared her throat.
“So, this is Rose,” she remarked
after the enormous pair went quiet and looked at her.
The Doctor’s brow shot up. “Yes! Of
course, introductions! Rose, meet Zepheera,” he grinned widely.
“Zepheera,” Rose repeated, looking
to the borrower to confirm she’d pronounced the unfamiliar name correctly.
After a nod of approval from the four and a half inch tall woman, Rose beamed.
“Good to meet you then, Zepheera.”
“Likewise.”
“She travels with me now,” the Doctor explained for Rose’s benefit. “Been
a while since I’ve had a non-human on board. She’s a–โ
"Borrower, yeah, we have ‘em on my
world, too,” interrupted Rose, making Zepheera blink in surprise. Noticing
caution bloom in the smaller woman’s expression, she added, “Don’t worry,
it’s not anything public just yet. Torchwood’s keeping everything completely
confidential.”
“Oh, how brilliant is that!” Seeing his
diminutive companion’s relief, he and Rose turned to each other. “See,
like I was saying about great mindsโฆ” From there, they seemed to carry out
a condensed conversation that consisted of half-complete sentences, smiles, and
a small hand gesture from the Doctor.
Something inside Zepheera melted as she
watched them. The Doctor looked so happy, happier than she’d ever seen
him. He had a certain energy now, a gleam in his eye that Zepheera recognized
all too well. She’d once had a sparkle like that. A long time ago.
“You two are adorable,” she cut in,
crossing her arms in a manner that would normally seem accusatory if not for the
ear-to-ear grin splitting her features. The Doctor and Rose turned their smiles
to the borrower. ย "My teeth
ache, you’re so sweet.“
The screen behind Zepheera beeped, ending
introductions. Between all the reports and correspondents between their other allies,
Zepheera couldn’t help but glance back at the Doctor every now and then. Even
with all the danger and devastation out there, he maintained that gleam in his
eye. And she knew they had a certain blonde to thank for that.
Zepheera couldn’t be more proud of her old
Time Lord.
Four hours there and four hours back. Like a school trip, Donna had called it. Such a duration was the main reason Donna had chosen to sunbathe in the Midnight Leisure Palace rather than accompany the Doctor and Zepheera on their little field trip to the Sapphire Waterfall.
Only two months since the borrower had joined their travels in the TARDIS, after the Doctor rescued her from a terrible circumstance, and Zepheera was already willing to spend the next eight hours locked in a box with several unknown humans. All for what would probably amount to fifteen minutes of a pretty view. Donna had to admit it was a rather brave decision for someone less than five inches tall.
Then again, she supposed Zepheera could have agreed to go because the Doctor would be there, and he was going because
Zepheera was gonna keep him company. Go figure.
Four hours later, the pool was still empty, apart from Donna in her robe and long chair. A few people had come and gone, but she paid them no mind. In fact, she didnโt think much of it when another set of footsteps echoed from the entrance hallway. Then she remembered that all the others who visited the pool had either been rowdy family groups or extra-friendly individuals chatting up the quiet staff. The silence of this personโs approach piqued Donnaโs interest enough to open her eyes and turn to look.
She gasped and sat bolt upright at the sight of the Doctor rounding the corner, his long overcoat draped over one arm. It was much too early for their return. Something was wrong, she just knew it; everything about him threw up red flags in Donnaโs mind, from his stony expression to his somber gait. Full of concern, she got up and approached him slowly.
When she got close enough, her breath caught at Zepheeraโs notable absence from his shoulder. The Doctor shook his head when he saw the worry in Donnaโs eyes, and he nodded toward his left shoulder. Now that she was closer, Donna could detect the slightest raise in the Doctorโs loosened collar on that side. Miniscule fingers curled around the edge of the fabric as the borrower underneath, partially illuminated by the potent x-tonic light, peeked warily out at Donna.
Donnaโs heart sank. Zepheera hadnโt acted like this around her since before theyโd gotten to know each other as close friends, and sheโd never known the Doctor to be so quiet.
Something happened.
Finding out what would have to wait. For now, Donnaโs friends were hurting and needed her comfort. Without a word, she pulled the Doctor into a tight hug, careful to avoid his left shoulder.
It took a moment, but the Doctor eventually hugged her back. A minute later, Donna felt the tiniest of weights dropping onto her own shoulder. A wave of relief swept over her as Zepheera nestled into the soft fabric of the robe near her neck. Whatever happened out there, it hadnโt affected any of the progress between the odd pair of women.
โAlright,โ she mumbled into the Doctorโs shoulder, warning them both that she was about to pull away. Meeting his dark gaze only filled Donna with determination. โTell me everything.โ
Both the borrower and the Time Lord turned to look at the human standing in the entrance to the TARDIS console room. The red-haired woman was shrugging on a jacket as she stepped in. โWho are you talking to?โ
โIโm in the middle of something, Donna,โ said the Doctor pointedly
Donna rolled her eyes and approached with purpose in her steps. โNo use keeping secrets from me, Spaceman, I live here too.โ
Her gaze quickly fell on Zepheera, whose heartbeat quickened at the contact with a completely new human โ Donna, the Doctor had called her.
โBlimey, get a load of that!โ the human exclaimed. Zepheera flinched at the volume and backed up into the screen behind her, pulling her knees close again. She squeezed her eyes shut, overwhelmed by the sight of two giants looming over her.
The Doctor looked appalled by his companionโs behavior. โDonna, lower your voice,โ he rebuked. โSheโs been through a lot, no need to frighten her all over again by gawking!โ
Without waiting for a response, he turned back to the four and a half inch tall woman huddled on the sill of his monitor. โZepheeraโฆ C’mon, look at me,โ he coaxed.
Considering she was outnumbered, Zepheera had no choice but to obey. She lifted her head to look up at the Doctor and Donna, who had come around to stand behind the Doctorโs right shoulder. The Doctor smiled encouragingly.
โThatโs it. See? No harm done. This is just my friend, Donna. She travels with me.โ
โSheโs so teeny,โ Donna cooed, leaning over the Doctor to stretch a finger toward Zepheera, as if touching her would somehow prove her existence further. Zepheera backed away from the sudden approach before the Doctor stopped the human.
โNo no, donโt do that,โ he warned firmly. โReally. Donโt.โ
Looking a bit sheepish, Donna withdrew her hand. โWas she always this small?โ
Now it was the Doctorโs turn to roll his eyes. โYes, now would you back off for a minute and let me get on with this?โ
Much to Zepheeraโs surprise, the human stepped away with a muttered apology. Once she was out of sight, the Doctor addressed Zepheera again. โSorry about that. Sheโs harmless, I promise.โ He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. โAnyway, what I meant to say was, Iโd like you to stay. At least for a while, just so I can make sure all those drugs didnโt leave you with any permanent damage. If you could bear with me for a few days, Iโll take you wherever you want to go. Does that sound alright to you?โ
Zepheera supposed that was fair. At least it didnโt sound like sheโd be locked in a cage anymore. She nodded her approval.
The Doctor smiled. โBrilliant. Welcome aboard, then. Er, is there anything you want to do now?โ
It took some digging, but Zepheera realized there was a lot she wanted to do. She wanted to sleep in a bed, she wanted to eat a meal that consisted of more than old cheese and bread, she wanted to drink an entire thimbleful of some kind of alcoholic drink. She looked down at herself; she wanted to wear clothes that made her feel like a person again. Then she touched a lock of her dark hair. It had already been getting long at the time of her capture, and it had grown past her shoulders over the months.
โI want to cut my hair,โ she told him. ย She was certain she wouldnโt feel anything like her old self until she did. And she had a feeling she could ask for the rest at any time.
Zepheera moaned softly as she sluggishly came to. The events of the last few hours replayed choppily in her mind. The manโฆhe had picked her up and held her close to his chest as he fought his way through all of the metal men in his path. She remembered gripping the brown pinstriped fabric of his suit just to keep steady. He took her somewhere and tried to get her to talk, but her drug-addled mind refused to let her respond. Then he made her drink something, and everything after that was fuzzy.
The more conscious she became, the more she noticed about her surroundings. The surface on which she lay was strangely leathery and warmโฆand if she listened closely, she could hear a muted thrum coming from deep within, pressing up against her body in a one-two-three-four.
It was alive. It was a hand!
She shot up with a startled exclamation, falling back on her hands and knees as the uneven ground twitched in surprise. As the hand flattened beneath her, she huddled into a frightened ball, awaiting the inevitable harm to befall her.
โItโs okay!โ the man from before whispered, though it was still more than loud enough to make the borrower flinch. โYouโre safe. Iโm so sorry, I didnโt think youโd be awake for another few hours.โ
Zepheera turned her head in the slightest to peek through the gap in the arm covering her head. He was so remarkably large, a small part of her wondered if he could even detect such a small movement.
โLook, erโฆ I donโt mean to scare you. Would it help if I set you down?โ
Zepheera frowned in confusion. She knew better than to trust this behemoth of a man after everything sheโd been through. Still, he did rescue her from that lab, and he hadnโt made a move to hurt her yet. Hell, heโd had her in his hands while she was asleep! He could have easily done her in then. But he didnโt, and something about those enormous brown orbs insisted that he could be trustworthy.
Slowly lowering her arms from her head, she clutched them close to her chest as she mustered up all of her courage and nodded.
The man smiled, pleased by her response. โAlright. Here we go.โ
His fingers curled back up, stretching over Zepheeraโs head as he slowly leaned forward and reached out toward a flat but narrow silver surface. She practically scrambled out of his hand, grateful for the solid ground.
Without the giant man filling her vision, Zepheera took in the rest of her surroundings. He sat back in a faded yellow seat, full of holes and duct-tape patches. The room was enormous and dome-like, covered in dim, round lights. Nothing else made sense beyond that; whatever she was standing on hovered above an endless sea of strange-looking levers and dials and cranks.
โWhatโs your name?โ The question made Zepheeraโs attention snap up to the man. She pressed her back against the wall behind her and eyed him warily. He sighed, an action that ruffled Zepheeraโs shoulder-length hair even at a distance. โIโm trying to help you. I need to know that youโre alright.โ
She bit her lip, then swallowed thickly past the lump in her throat. It had been a while since sheโd spoken to anyone.
โZepheera,โ she answered, her voice hoarse from disuse.
The man smiled again. โBeautiful name,โ he remarked. โIโm the Doctor.โ Her eyes flared up with terror again, and he quickly added, โNo no no no, not that kind of doctor. Please listen, whatever they did to you, Iโm not like them, I promise. Trust me, I only want to help.โ
Unsure if she believed him or not, Zepheera forced herself to relax a little and nodded to show she understood.
โIโm going to ask you a few more questions, Zepheera,โ the Doctor informed her. โJust to make sure youโre okay now that that nasty drugโs out of your system.โ
Zepheera slid her back against the wall until she sat with her knees hugged to her chest. โOkay,โ she murmured. She resigned herself to his care as long as he simply seemed concerned for her. That wasnโt a feeling sheโd ever expected from someone his size.
As her fear slowly dissipated, curiosity began to take its place. Zepheera began to ask the Doctor questions of her own, and before long they had a back and forth going. Zepheera told the Doctor how she ended up in that lab (leaving out the details about her hidden village) and what exactly they had done to her and the few others like her. She explained that she was the only one left in that place. In return, she learned where exactly she was: inside the Doctorโs TARDIS, which apparently could travel through time and space with ease.
It was the Doctorโs turn to ask a question. โHow old are you?โ
Zepheera frowned, realizing that she wasnโt sure. โWhat day is it?โ She had been captured a couple months before her birthday, but she wasnโt entirely sure how much time sheโd spent in that lab.
The Doctor leaned forward and pressed a button on the console, causing the wall behind Zepheera to light up. She jumped and whirl around to stare at the massive screen behind her as it displayed a series of concentric circles. โMay seventh, year twenty eighty-five,โ he recited.
Six months, she thought despondently.
โI, erm. I guess that makes me a hundred and fifty-eight.โ Happy birthday to me.
The Doctorโs brow rose as he sat back. โWow. Older than you look,โ he mused. โDo you all age so slowly?โ
A sad smile tugged at her lips. โNah, it’sโฆjust me, I think.โ She took a steadying breath before asking, โHow old are you?โ
โNine hundred and five,โ he replied without hesitation.
Now it was Zepheeraโs turn to be surprised. โSo, way older than you look.โ
The Doctor smirked, then adopted a more thoughtful expression. โZepheeraโฆ Is there anything for you to go back to? A home, family, friends?โ
Her heart stuttered at the question. As surprisingly pleasant as this man seemed, she was definitely not comfortable leading him to her people. She still had a duty to protect them until she had a full grasp of this new situation. โNo,โ she answered evenly. โNothing.โ
โIโm sorry to hear that,โ said the Doctor earnestly. He rubbed the back of his neck as he seemed to carefully consider his next words. โWell, if youโd like, you could โ I mean, it would be entirely up to you, of course, butโฆ I was wondering if you wanted toโโ
โDoctor?โ
Zepheeraโs entire body tensed at this new voice.
Zepheera leaned wearily against the clear acrylic that made up the opening of her kennel. She, the other borrowers, and the rats had all been kept in this large structure made up of dozens of small cubby-like containers, each about the size of a shoebox.
Though, Zepheera supposed now it was just her and the rats.
Each had a secure lock system, and the front hatches thankfully had a few air holes drilled into them. The rest of the walls were opaque, isolating each specimen thoroughly. She couldnโt see the rats she heard scratching futilely at their own walls. Even clean of drugs, Zepheera had given up on escape long ago.
The room was empty, so Zepheera had nothing to look at other than her own hand as it traced the tiny air hole nearby. It was too small for her to reach through, though sheโd tried. Sheโd nearly broken her hand in the process, she recalled distantly. Even the memory of pain couldnโt evoke any emotion in her.
With a loud smash of the door, several human scientists burst into the room. Zepheera blinked slowly as she lifted her head to look at them. They were frantic, screaming and yelling things that couldnโt quite make it into her prison at such a distance.
They were followed by what Zepheera could only describe as metal men. Five entered, one for each scientist, stomping in time. Their soulless black eyes completely disregarded the unit that held Zepheera and the rats.
The metal men spoke in deep, cold voices, but she couldnโt process what they were saying. In short order, they cornered the scientists and touched them with outstretched silver hands. The humansโ bodies succumbed to the electricity shooting through them, and they fell dead the instant they were let go.
Zepheera didnโt even have the capacity to react.
The silver intruders spoke among themselves, but Zepheera couldnโt hear what they were saying. She numbly crawled closer to the air holes, some deep part of her aware that it was important to know what exactly was going on.
โOi, metalheads!โ roared a new voice from the direction of the door. Zepheera calmly turned her head to look, finding a strange-looking man filling the doorway. He wore a brown pinstriped suit with red converse, a style of shoe Zepheera had thought to be long out of style. He was thin as a matchstick and had hair so unruly it could almost be dubbed rebellious. His eyes were wild with adrenaline, aimed solidly at the intruders. โHave you had your shots? Seems to me like youโre due for a booster!โ
He hurled a small cylindrical device at the metal men, and it stuck fast right dab in the middle of oneโs chest. They all screamed as a massive field of energy surrounded them, and just like the humans before them, they collapsed one by one.
Without missing a beat, the man crossed the room quickly, examining the bodies of the scientists. He sighed when they all turned up dead. Then he stepped over to one of the metal creatures, prying his device off of its chest. He raised a small tool โ a probe, it looked like โ and activated the charge once again.
His eyes scanned the room as he pocketed the device, passing right over Zepheera before returning in a double take.
โWhat?โ he frowned and walked carefully over.
The most Zepheera was able to react was a slight raise of her eyebrows. By all accounts, she should be scared out of her wits. Sheโd just watched this man presumably kill a bunch of silver nightmares who had murdered humans moments before. She couldnโt even begin to think what this man could have in store for someone like her, even if she were in a right state of mind.
To her nonexistent surprise, he simply leaned down and peered in at the borrower, concern etched in his features.
โOh, you poor soul, what have they done to you?โ
Zepheera blinked slowly at him.
He clenched his jaw in determination and attempted to open the hatch by hand. She knew he couldnโt do it that way, there were higher levels of security for the test subjects to eliminate chance of escape. Even so, his proximity to her awoke the instincts that had been drilled into her since childhood, and she backed away from him at a sluggish pace.
Abandoning that strategy, the stranger whipped out his probe, buzzing it at the lock. It released and the door swung open. She froze when he reached a hand in, laying it palm-up next to Zepheera.
โCome with me,โ he urged, pleading with those big brown eyes.
She stared at his hand for a second, but made no move toward or away from it. The man blinked in confusion at her non-reaction and tried again. โDonโt be afraid, Iโm not gonna hurtโโ
Before he could finish, more ominous stomping could be heard in the hallway outside. The man glanced between the borrower and the door, conflicted for a moment. Finally, he turned an apologetic look to Zepheera.
โIโm so sorry, thereโs no time.โ That said, the hand shifted to scoop up the four and a half inch tall woman into its cupped palm.
As you can tell by the icon, this was prompted about a month ago ^^; Sorry for how late this is, but I finally got around to it! Hope you enjoy! (I assume you meant the episode with van Gogh, cuz I donโt remember an episode with da Vinci)
BTaS Canon: No
Episode: Vincent and the Doctor
Doctor(s): Eleventh Doctor
Companion(s): Zepheera, Amy Pond, Vincent Van Gogh
A shriek split the quiet of the night.
โAmy!โ The Doctor jumped up out of his chair and ran out back, Vincent following closely behind.
Meeting Vincent van Gogh had been a bizarre experience, for Zepheera especially. Unlike the Doctor and Amy, she wasnโt allowed to interact with him. The Doctor had insisted on taking precaution when traveling back in time to meet the renowned painter, who had the potential to be unstable or volatile, a potential threat to the four and a half inch tall woman.
She had already been wearing a perception filter attached to a TARDIS key on their visit to the Musรฉe d’Orsay to avoid being seen by the humans there, so she kept it on for their journey back in time. The borrower kept to the Doctorโs shoulder, observing and occasionally whispering in the Doctorโs ear when she couldnโt keep a comment or suggestion to herself. While this allowed her to see the living legend of van Gogh up close and almost personal, it did mean she had to silently endure endless van Gogh puns and flirtatious conversations between the present humans that consisted primarily of remarks about their hair color.
At first, Zepheera wondered if this precaution had been an overreaction. Vincent seemed quite level-headed, albeit eccentric. Once or twice during the initial conversation with her companions and Vincent, the borrower almost thought Vincent was looking right at her. But a second later heโd be looking elsewhere, and Zepheera reminded herself that that was impossible. He was nervous, meeting new people and used to people mocking him. His eyes shifted and jumped around whenever he wasnโt talking to Amy.
On the other hand, after the painter had his evening coffee, he became nearly manic. Not violent necessarily, but he lost all sense of volume control and said whatever came to mind. He had been ranting about colors speaking to him when they all heard Amy scream.
Zepheera flattened herself against the Doctorโs tweed jacket as he rushed into the garden out back, calling Amyโs name repeatedly. They found her in a heap on the ground, breathing hard and looking around frantically.
โWhat happened?โ asked the Doctor, following his human companionโs gaze.
โI dunno, I didnโt see it,โ Amy gasped. โI was just having a look at some of the paintings out here when something hit me from behind.”
The Doctor nodded. “Itโs okay, itโs gone now. Weโre here.”
Suddenly Vincent gave a shout that made Zepheera jump. The Doctor tried to calm him down, raising his own voice to be heard over Vincentโs continued cries. All the noise overwhelmed Zepheera, and she clapped her hands over her ears. This succeeded in dampening the volume a little, but also eliminated any coherency in the massive speech. So she scanned the area to try and figure out what was going on through observation.
Vincentโs eyes were wide, utterly terrified, and he held a defensive hand between him and the Doctor. But he was looking past the Doctor, Zepheera realized. She whirled around, and the sight made her heart race.
“Doctor!โ she called desperately as the enormous, horrifying creature before her crept toward the Doctor and Amy. A warning about the monster caught in her throat as the Doctor moved sharply aside, and her hands flew from her ears to grip the jacket again. Her eyes widened even more when she saw that Vincent was charging the beast with some kind of pitchfork.
โDoctor, whatโs happening?โ Amy demanded.
โI donโt know,โ said the Doctor, perplexed and concerned.
Vincent swung the pitchfork toward the creature until it backed into a wall, then bounded off into a more shadowy area of the garden. โRun!โ he urged, waving for Amy and the Doctor to get away.
โYeah, sounds like a good idea,โ muttered the Doctor as he carefully approached Vincent. โAmy, get back! Heโs having some kind of fit!”
Zepheera, who had lost sight of the creature at the same time as Vincent, stopped searching for it to frown at the Doctor. Had he not seen the monstrous being?
Unless he couldnโt. Borrowers like Zepheera had developed heightened senses of perception over the years; she had seen things that even the Doctor was unable to in the past. For whatever reason, Vincent had to be an exception because he definitely saw the creature.
The Doctor tried to talk Vincent down when the painter held his weapon at the ready, awaiting the creatureโs next move. A growl to the right caught Zepheeraโs ear, and she turned to find a massive tail preparing to strike the Doctor from behind.
“Doctor, duck left!โ The Time Lord glanced to the right, confused when he saw nothing, but he followed Zepheeraโs instructions and dodged to the left. He moved about a half second too late and got clipped on his right arm as the tail swung at him, and he was still knocked off-balance. But now he could no longer deny that there was something there.
The Doctor brandished a stick of his own and, with Zepheeraโs help, he and Vincent managed to drive the creature away.
โItโs gone, Vincent confirmed.
The Doctor nodded, tossing aside his stick. “Excellent. Good work, Vincent.”
With an eyebrow raised at the Doctor, Vincent said, “You couldnโt see it, could you Doctor?”
“Yes! โฆWell, okay, no, butโโ the Doctor sputtered.
โItโs alright,โ Vincent assured, setting down his pitchfork. They started toward Amy, intent on going back inside. โIn any case, youโre a lucky man. You might have been hurt were it not for your shoulder angel protecting you.”
The Doctor froze and Zepheera stiffened. “My what?โ asked the Doctor.
โYour shoulder angel,โ Vincent repeated, smiling at Zepheera. โIโve been watching her guide you all night.”
Zepheera flushed. He could see me the entire time.
Vincent continued as they walked. “To be honest, she was quite a shock to see. But since Iโve never seen anything like her on the shoulders of the people in this town, and you offered to help me, I chose to take it as a sign. Perhaps your visit will do me some good after all.โ
After reuniting with Clara, Zepheera opted to ride on her shoulder to avoid further conflict with her Doctors. Her shoulder was slimmer than either of theirs, but as long as she kept still and steady it wasnโt so bad. If she ever moved around too much, there was plenty of Claraโs hair within Zepheeraโs reach. A little yank would do Clara less harm than a fall would do the borrower.ย
It was bizarre for Zepheera to bear witness to the wedding of the Tenth Doctor and Queen Elizabeth I, but it wasnโt nearly as awkward for her as it was for his other incarnations. Clara was enthusiastically supportive, a feeling that Zepheera just couldnโt replicate. She didnโt know that version of the Doctor like Zepheera did.ย
The second it was over, Ten rushed to his TARDIS and the others followed suit. Zepheera was hit with a pang of nostalgia at the sight of his desktop theme, but with three Doctors in one TARDIS, it didnโt last. The theme kept glitching between their personal versions, finally settling on Elevenโs.ย
โRight then!โ he clapped his hands together. โLondon Tower, here we come!โ
โNo!โ Clara interjected, making Zepheera flinch in surprise. She tugged on one of Claraโs brown locks to remind the human of her proximity to the noise she made. Biting back a wince, Clara continued in a lower tone.ย
โUNIT HQ,โ she insisted. Sheโd been there with the Zygons as they took over the facility, using an old Vortex Manipulator to travel back in time to meet up with the Doctors. โThey followed us there in the Black Archive.โย
All three Doctors stopped what they were doing to turn toward Clara with grave expressions.ย
โUh-oh,โ Zepheera murmured. โI know that face. Triple that face canโt be good.โ
Zepheera had resigned herself to keep quiet while the two most recent incarnations of the Doctor rode out the novelty of being together with their four and a half inch tall companion. Ten, who hadnโt met Zepheera yet in his timeline, kept trying to surreptitiously learn about what was in store for him and the borrower. She or Eleven, depending on who spoke first, would always answer these types of questions with the word โSpoilers,โ and Ten would moan about how the timelines were โtoo wibbly and I wonโt remember anyway!โ This only earned him a shrug and elicited a short-lived pout.
Zepheera hadnโt realized how much she had missed that pout.
Eventually the youngest incarnation of the Doctor insisted that they should be making some progress with the whole Zygon-invasion-and-painting-of-Gallifrey problem. The other two conceded and stood in unison. Zepheera got to her feet as well, throwing her single-strapped rucksack over her shoulder.
She turned to find two upturned hands in front of her, both acting as platform for her to climb on. When she looked up, the Doctors were staring each other down.
โBack off, Sandshoes!โ hissed the Eleventh Doctor, nudging his counterpart away. โSheโs not your companion yet!โ
โExactly! You can spend all the time you like with her, and I wanna know what I have to look forward to! Iโm dying for a sneak peek.โ Ten exclaimed.
Zepheera bit back a cringe at his phrasing.
Eleven shot back, โYou havenโt met her yet. She hasnโt had time to properly train you up.โ
โOh, come on, you know sheโs not the first life form her size Iโve encountered!โ
โWell itโs different when you live with one, and take it from me who took it from her, you are a shrugger!โ
This took the Tenth Doctor aback. He glanced between his future self and his future companion. โI am?โ he asked, sounding subdued.
Eleven nodded emphatically. โAnd a fidgeter.โ
โOh, for Godโs sake!โ sighed the War Doctor, waiting semi-patiently as the other two squabbled. โYou fools are arguing over the lady as though she isnโt here! If anyoneโs going to decide who she goes along with, it should be her.โ
Ten and Eleven shared a sheepish look and nodded, mumbling apologies to Zepheera. They stood quietly, waiting for the borrower to make her choice.
Zepheera smiled gratefully at the War Doctor, who nodded once in return. He was an enigmatic one, that much was certain, but he seemed just as sweet and caring as the Doctors she knew and loved. She made a mental note to find some time alone with him later, sit down and get to know the Doctor before she knew him.
But for now, she had a decision to make. After a short moment of deliberation, she took a deep breath and approached Eleven. He clapped his hands triumphantly before offering her one to climb onto. Ten sighed but accepted Zepheeraโs choice. As Eleven lifted her to his shoulder, she shot Ten an apologetic look.
โYou are fidgety. And a shrugger,โ she admitted. Ten nodded, barely suppressing a pout at Elevenโs smug look.
A small smirk tugged at Zepheeraโs lip. โTo your credit, though, you did train up faster than this one.โ
Ten snorted and Elevenโs jaw dropped in indignation. โOh, thanks a lot there, pipsqueak! Letโs just go already.โ
โFinally,โ muttered the War Doctor.
As they were leaving, Ten crept up behind Eleven and softly asked Zepheera, โHow on Earth do you even stay up there with, y’knowโฆโ He rubbed his chin, raising a questioning eyebrow at the small woman.
โHe slouches,โ hissed Zepheera in reply, twisting around to wink conspiratorially at Ten.
โOh, leave off, you two!โ grumbled Eleven.
Ten smirked. โI have a feeling I like you, Zepheera.โ
โI should hope so,โ she said, facing front again before he could catch the hint of sadness that made it into her smile and eyes.
It was dizzying, being in the presence of two incarnations of the Doctor โ three if you counted the one in the corner by himself, who looked the oldest but was chronologically the youngest. The one theyโd plucked from the Last Great Time War. Zepheera was glad she was sitting down on the table in front of them, because sheโd certainly have fallen over just trying to processย what she was looking at and listening to.
She knew both of these men at different points in her life. They were so different, yet they were the same person, and Zepheera had traveled with them both (although, the tenth hadnโt yet met her in his timeline). And what was worse, they were getting chummy.
โIโll be honest,โ said the younger Doctor whom Zepheera had decided to call Ten in her head. Sheโd settled on Eleven with her current Doctor, and the third was confusing to say the least, so she held off on nicknaming him.ย โWhen you first showed up, I thought for a second that youโd taken on a Tertatian for a companion.โ
โOh, I remember the Tertatians!โ exclaimed Eleven.ย โLittle purpley people with their little farms and mills and things!โ
Ten smirked reminiscently, then glanced back at Zepheera as she sat there quietly. He took her silence as discomfort, and quickly amended,ย โI mean, obviously youโre not. Same size, basically, but significantly lessโฆpurple. โฆSorry?โ He scratched the back of his neck.
Zepheera nodded politely in acknowledgement, still not quite sure if she trusted herself enough to speak. What do you say to a person you saw die and become the person heโs talking to?
โDo you remember that little Tertatian lad?โ Eleven cut in, allowing Zepheeraโs shoulders to relax a hair.ย โThe ten-year-old who kept stowing away on your shoelaces!โ
Ten broke into a fit of giggles.ย โSpeedy little thing, wasnโt he?โ
โRunning around with that crossbow of his!โ snickered Eleven.
โOh, what was his name? Started withโฆM? MโฆMarโno no, notย โMarโ. Moh, Meh, MihโฆMickey-Mick-Mickeyโno, thatโs wrong!โ Tenโs frown deepened as he racked his brain.
Eleven clapped his hands together.ย โMatz!โ
Tenโs eyes lit up.ย โThatโs it! Good olโ Matzy.โ
Zepheera allowed herself to smile at their antics. At least they were getting along.
Officially, Time Lords are fairly immune to the affects of alcohol, and can only get drunk if they want to. In addition, they can very easily snap themselves out of it.
The Doctor, in his Tenth incarnation, is both a silly drunk and a sad drunk, depending on the circumstances and the level of drunk he allows himself to be. There is no in between.
Imagine Zepheera stumbling upon her Time Lord after heโs had way more than a few. Heโs either singing loudly and off-key and laughing at/with inanimate objects, or heโs curled up in a ball of despair shaking with silent sobs. Either way, the borrower will eventually get noticed and heโll suddenly become very still, all effects of inebriation leaving him at once.
Zepheera will comfort him without even questioning what drove him to get so drunk in the first place, especially in the latter situation. Sheโll remind him that whatโs done is in the past, and heโs not alone anymore.
