Zepheera-Vision — Try The Chips

Zepheera was utterly exhausted.

While technically her companions did all the running from the Masterโ€™s threats, the four and a half inch tall woman was in an equal state of adrenaline, hanging on tight to her Time Lordโ€™s collar in order to not be thrown off in all the chaos.

Hours later, she sat on Captain Jack Harknessโ€™ shoulder, mostly so she could speak more directly to the Doctor for once. They had finally reached a place of safety, and the captain just returned with hastily scavenged food, a few bags of chips.

Jack lifted a chip to his shoulder, smirking at the pun while Zepheera took it. She eyed it suspiciously; she didnโ€™t often have access to fried food, and when she did it was usually old and mushy and a real hassle for a borrower to eat.

When she expressed her concern, the Doctor vouched for the chips. โ€œActually, theyโ€™re not bad,โ€ he said, munching on another. โ€œGo on, give it a try.โ€

With a thoughtful frown at the chip in her lap, nearly tall enough to reach Zepheeraโ€™s shoulder, she gave a shrug and broke off a small portion of the tip. If she didnโ€™t like it after all, she could always give whatever she didnโ€™t finish to one of the humans.

She gave it a small nibble, and soon found herself finishing her portion, breaking off another piece for seconds.

Zepheera-Vision — An Old Doctor

image

From her perch on top of the railing around the console, Zepheera watched the two human-sized men across the room. She knew better than anyone that neither of them were human, and in fact, they were the same man.

The TARDIS had gone berserk, throwing the four and a half inch tall woman off the Doctorโ€™s shoulder and halfway across the room. She was thankfully unharmed, but it didnโ€™t take long to notice the entirely new presence. At first Zepheera scrambled to hide from the stranger, but when the Doctor seemed to recognize this man, her wariness shifted to confusion.

This was only magnified when the new man referred to himself as the Doctor, and was seemingly unaware that he was face to face with a future incarnation of his.

Rather than clearing up the confusion and introducing his tiny companion, Zepheeraโ€™s Doctor was entirely caught up in his nostalgia and the excitement of the impending crisis. Zepheera had never seen someone so entirely pleased to meet himself.

Sheโ€™d have to introduce herself, she determined as she dashed across the thick pipe of the railing.

Zepheera-Vision — The Last Color

Zepheera would never understand how one could simply drain an entire planet of color, but according to the Doctor it was an extremely malicious procedure. Once every single thing was dulled to black and white, total corrosion of the planet would begin.

When the Time Lord and his four and a half inch tall companion arrived, they were one of the few things left in the area that were not black and white. However, it didnโ€™t take long for them and even the TARDIS were monochromatic. It was a race against the clock to find the machine instigating the calamitous procedure and shut it down so they could even begin to reverse it.

Zepheera clung to the Doctorโ€™s shoulder as he ran through the alien spaceship, nearing the motherboard that could shut down the entire thing and restore the planet to its original state. Desperately, he fished out his sonic screwdriver and gave it a quick buzz, relieved to find it glowing blue. The last color in the world.

Zepheera-Vision — A Little Too Much

โ€œBlimey, youโ€™re a lightweightโ€ฆโ€ muttered the Doctor, bracing a hand on the console as he dropped to his knees.

โ€œOi, zip it!โ€ Zepheera called up irritably through the grate of the floor sheโ€™d fallen through moments ago. It was one of those rare special occasions that inspired the Doctor to unearth perfectly aged alien wines for his companion and himself to enjoy. Zepheera simply lacked the uncanny Time Lord ability to control just how drunk she got. โ€œI am four and a half inches tall and havenโ€™t touched the stuff in nearly thirty years, Iโ€™m the definition of lightweight!โ€

The Doctor grumbled as he reached down for the handle that would lift up the panel, uncovering his tiny companion sitting on a trunk and staring up at him with her arms crossed.

โ€œWell. Now you know where the floor is. And that it has holes in it.โ€

โ€œI hate you,โ€ murmured Zepheera, offering no further protest as the Doctor reached down to retrieve his friend.

โ€œI know.โ€

Zepheera-Vision — Happy New Year

image

Krrk-krrk-krrk-krrk-krrk!

Out of seven likenesses of Zepheera, six fell to their knees writhing in pain as the Doctor sauntered into the room with a noise maker. The one that wasnโ€™t an alien brightened and hurried to join her friend.

Being four and a half inches tall, she naturally crossed the room at a much slower rate than the Time Lord, and suddenly he was standing over her, the noise maker still going on. Ever aware of his borrower companion, the Doctor came to a stop when she approached him, staring pointedly at the alien doubles of Zepheera as he continued to spin his strange weapon against them.

โ€œI think you got em!โ€ Zepheera called up, glancing back at her copies. Most of them had fallen unconscious  from the sensory overload their extremely sensitive ears were experiencing.

Looking back at the Doctor, he gave the noise maker a few last turns for good measure, then bent down to offer a hand to his tiny friend.

โ€œAnd a happy new year,โ€ he quipped, lifting her to her usual spot on his shoulder.

Sherlock AU

Eventually I will. At the time, I was endeavoring to do these month-long diversions from my usual storyline to keep things moving. Then school started and life happened and I started larger writing projects with friends (one of which is also Sherlock related) so I fell behind on my updates.

I definitely have plans for that AU, so donโ€™t worry. I wonโ€™t leave you hanging forever.

Doctor y Doctor

John Watson didnโ€™t stop to think. The fact that he and Sherlock were already late to meet Lestrade at a fresh, new, and conveniently nearby crime scene completely left his mind. He saw a man get blindsided by some punk kid on a skateboard and fall hard on the ground while the assailant rode on. John immediately rushed to his side.

He shoved his way through the small crowd gathering to gawk at the man with morbid curiosity. It was easy to see why; on top of the spectacle, the man was rather odd-looking in general. Mid-thirties, early forties but with a forward-sweeping spike to his hair, a brown pinstriped suit paired with white Converse of all things, and a long, tan overcoat to put it all together. It was a wonder how this strange person had escaped the skaterโ€™s notice. Luckily the chap didnโ€™t seem too badly hurt, but he was groaning something terrible and clutching his head.

โ€œSteady on, mate. Iโ€™m a doctor, and youโ€™ve been hit hard.โ€ John spoke evenly and kindly as he knelt by the man and moved his hands away from his face so he could check for signs of concussion. โ€œDo you remember what happened?โ€

The chocolate-brown eye John was holding open zeroed in on him, and the brow above it furrowed. Then his hand shot to his right shoulder and scrambled around, as though he were looking for something.

He started to sit up quickly, but John stopped him with a hand to the chest.

โ€œNo, no, donโ€™t get up too fastโ€“โ€

โ€œGet off!โ€

The man shoved John roughly away, knocking him on his arse. Then he got on his hands and knees, calling out some strange word that John didnโ€™t recognize. It almost sounded like a rejected spell from Harry Potter.

Regardless, John stood and made one last attempt to calm the man down.

โ€œSir, you need medical attention,โ€ John insisted.

The man shook off the hand John laid on his shoulder, then jumped up to his full height. John blinked as the man loomed over him, despite only being about half a foot taller than him. His eyes, while clear, were crazed and deadly.

โ€œI donโ€™t need a doctor. I am the Doctor. Now go. Away.โ€

John stared as the man went back to searching the ground. By then the thin crowd had been scared off by the manโ€™s apparent madness. โ€œAlright, man, suit yourself,โ€ the doctor muttered as he backed off. Clearly the matter was out of his hands, and he was on his way to see Lestrade anyhow. Perhaps he could tip the detective inspector off, and send someone over to deal with the situation.

โ€œWell, I tried,โ€ sighed John as he approached Sherlock, who had waited for him. โ€œLetโ€™s go, I guess.โ€

โ€œActually, John, you go on ahead,โ€ said Sherlock.

John frowned. โ€œBut Lestradeโ€“โ€

โ€œSomethingโ€™s come up. Besides, I highly doubt he has anything you canโ€™t handle on your own. Meet back at the flat.โ€

And that was it. Sherlock walked off without another word, leaving John confused and more than a little annoyed.

Midnight – Epilogue

image

Midnight | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Four hours there and four hours back. Like a school trip, Donna had called it. Such a duration was the main reason Donna had chosen to sunbathe in the Midnight Leisure Palace rather than accompany the Doctor and Zepheera on their little field trip to the Sapphire Waterfall.

Only two months since the borrower had joined their travels in the TARDIS, after the Doctor rescued her from a terrible circumstance, and Zepheera was already willing to spend the next eight hours locked in a box with several unknown humans. All for what would probably amount to fifteen minutes of a pretty view. Donna had to admit it was a rather brave decision for someone less than five inches tall.

Then again, she supposed Zepheera could have agreed to go because the Doctor would be there, and he was going because

Zepheera was gonna keep him company. Go figure.

Four hours later, the pool was still empty, apart from Donna in her robe and long chair. A few people had come and gone, but she paid them no mind. In fact, she didnโ€™t think much of it when another set of footsteps echoed from the entrance hallway. Then she remembered that all the others who visited the pool had either been rowdy family groups or extra-friendly individuals chatting up the quiet staff. The silence of this personโ€™s approach piqued Donnaโ€™s interest enough to open her eyes and turn to look.

She gasped and sat bolt upright at the sight of the Doctor rounding the corner, his long overcoat draped over one arm. It was much too early for their return. Something was wrong, she just knew it; everything about him threw up red flags in Donnaโ€™s mind, from his stony expression to his somber gait. Full of concern, she got up and approached him slowly.

When she got close enough, her breath caught at Zepheeraโ€™s notable absence from his shoulder. The Doctor shook his head when he saw the worry in Donnaโ€™s eyes, and he nodded toward his left shoulder. Now that she was closer, Donna could detect the slightest raise in the Doctorโ€™s loosened collar on that side. Miniscule fingers curled around the edge of the fabric as the borrower underneath, partially illuminated by the potent x-tonic light, peeked warily out at Donna.

Donnaโ€™s heart sank. Zepheera hadnโ€™t acted like this around her since before theyโ€™d gotten to know each other as close friends, and sheโ€™d never known the Doctor to be so quiet.

Something happened.

Finding out what would have to wait. For now, Donnaโ€™s friends were hurting and needed her comfort. Without a word, she pulled the Doctor into a tight hug, careful to avoid his left shoulder.

It took a moment, but the Doctor eventually hugged her back. A minute later, Donna felt the tiniest of weights dropping onto her own shoulder. A wave of relief swept over her as Zepheera nestled into the soft fabric of the robe near her neck. Whatever happened out there, it hadnโ€™t affected any of the progress between the odd pair of women.

โ€œAlright,โ€ she mumbled into the Doctorโ€™s shoulder, warning them both that she was about to pull away. Meeting his dark gaze only filled Donna with determination. โ€œTell me everything.โ€

Zepheera-Vision — The Companion

image

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 2.5 | Part 3

โ€œDoctor?โ€

Both the borrower and the Time Lord turned to look at the human standing in the entrance to the TARDIS console room. The
red-haired woman was shrugging on a jacket as she stepped in. โ€œWho are you talking to?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m in the middle of something, Donna,โ€ said the Doctor pointedly

Donna rolled her eyes and approached with purpose in her steps. โ€œNo use keeping secrets from me, Spaceman, I live here too.โ€

Her gaze quickly fell on Zepheera, whose heartbeat quickened at the contact with a completely new human โ€“ Donna, the Doctor had called her.

โ€œBlimey, get a load of that!โ€ the human exclaimed. Zepheera flinched at the volume and backed up into the screen behind her, pulling her knees close again. She squeezed her eyes shut, overwhelmed by the sight of two giants looming over her.

The Doctor looked appalled by his companionโ€™s behavior. โ€œDonna, lower your voice,โ€ he rebuked. โ€œSheโ€™s been through a lot, no need to frighten her all over again by gawking!โ€

Without waiting for a response, he turned back to the four and a half inch tall woman huddled on the sill of his monitor. โ€œZepheeraโ€ฆ C’mon, look at me,โ€ he coaxed.

Considering she was outnumbered, Zepheera had no choice but to obey. She lifted her head to look up at the Doctor and Donna, who had come around to stand behind the Doctorโ€™s right shoulder. The Doctor smiled encouragingly.

โ€œThatโ€™s it. See? No harm done. This is just my friend, Donna. She travels with me.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s so teeny,โ€ Donna cooed, leaning over the Doctor to stretch a finger toward Zepheera, as if touching her would somehow prove her existence further. Zepheera backed away from the sudden approach before the Doctor stopped the human.

โ€œNo no, donโ€™t do that,โ€ he warned firmly. โ€œReally. Donโ€™t.โ€

Looking a bit sheepish, Donna withdrew her hand. โ€œWas she always this small?โ€

Now it was the Doctorโ€™s turn to roll his eyes. โ€œYes, now would you back off for a minute and let me get on with this?โ€

Much to Zepheeraโ€™s surprise, the human stepped away with a muttered apology. Once she was out of sight, the Doctor addressed Zepheera again. โ€œSorry about that. Sheโ€™s harmless, I promise.โ€ He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. โ€œAnyway, what I meant to say was, Iโ€™d like you to stay. At least for a while, just so I can make sure all those drugs didnโ€™t leave you with any permanent damage. If you could bear with me for a few days, Iโ€™ll take you wherever you want to go. Does that sound alright to you?โ€

Zepheera supposed that was fair. At least it didnโ€™t sound like sheโ€™d be locked in a cage anymore. She nodded her approval.

The Doctor smiled. โ€œBrilliant. Welcome aboard, then. Er, is there anything you want to do now?โ€

It took some digging, but Zepheera realized there was a lot she wanted to do. She wanted to sleep in a bed, she wanted to eat a meal that consisted of more than old cheese and bread, she wanted to drink an entire thimbleful of some kind of alcoholic drink. She looked down at herself; she wanted to wear clothes that made her feel like a person again. Then she touched a lock of her dark hair. It had already been getting long at the time of her capture, and it had grown past her shoulders over the months.

โ€œI want to cut my hair,โ€ she told him. ย She was certain she wouldnโ€™t feel
anything like her old self until she did. And she had a feeling she could ask for the rest at any time.

Zepheera-Vision Preface — The Companion

Part 1 | Part 2ย | Part 2.5ย | Part 3

Zepheera moaned softly as she sluggishly came to. The events of the last few hours replayed choppily in her mind. The manโ€ฆhe had picked her up and held her close to his chest as he fought his way through all of the metal men in his path. She remembered gripping the brown pinstriped fabric of his suit just to keep steady. He took her somewhere and tried to get her to talk, but her drug-addled mind refused to let her respond. Then he made her drink something, and everything after that was fuzzy.

The more conscious she became, the more she noticed about her surroundings. The surface on which she lay was strangely leathery and warmโ€ฆand if she listened closely, she could hear a muted thrum coming from deep within, pressing up against her body in a one-two-three-four.

It was alive. It was a hand!

She shot up with a startled exclamation, falling back on her hands and knees as the uneven ground twitched in surprise. As the hand flattened beneath her, she huddled into a frightened ball, awaiting the inevitable harm to befall her.

โ€œItโ€™s okay!โ€ the man from before whispered, though it was still more than loud enough to make the borrower flinch. โ€œYouโ€™re safe. Iโ€™m so sorry, I didnโ€™t think youโ€™d be awake for another few hours.โ€

Zepheera turned her head in the slightest to peek through the gap in the arm covering her head. He was so remarkably large, a small part of her wondered if he could even detect such a small movement.

โ€œLook, erโ€ฆ I donโ€™t mean to scare you. Would it help if I set you down?โ€

Zepheera frowned in confusion. She knew better than to trust this behemoth of a man after everything sheโ€™d been through. Still, he did rescue her from that lab, and he hadnโ€™t made a move to hurt her yet. Hell, heโ€™d had her in his hands while she was asleep! He could have easily done her in then. But he didnโ€™t, and something about those enormous brown orbs insisted that he could be trustworthy.

Slowly lowering her arms from her head, she clutched them close to her chest as she mustered up all of her courage and nodded.

The man smiled, pleased by her response. โ€œAlright. Here we go.โ€

His fingers curled back up, stretching over Zepheeraโ€™s head as he slowly leaned forward and reached out toward a flat but narrow silver surface. She practically scrambled out of his hand, grateful for the solid ground.

Without the giant man filling her vision, Zepheera took in the rest of her surroundings. He sat back in a faded yellow seat, full of holes and duct-tape patches. The room was enormous and dome-like, covered in dim, round lights. Nothing else made sense beyond that; whatever she was standing on hovered above an endless sea of strange-looking levers and dials and cranks.

โ€œWhatโ€™s your name?โ€ The question made Zepheeraโ€™s attention snap up to the man. She pressed her back against the wall behind her and eyed him warily. He sighed, an action that ruffled Zepheeraโ€™s shoulder-length hair even at a distance. โ€œIโ€™m trying to help you. I need to know that youโ€™re alright.โ€

She bit her lip, then swallowed thickly past the lump in her throat. It had been a while since sheโ€™d spoken to anyone.

โ€œZepheera,โ€ she answered, her voice hoarse from disuse.

The man smiled again. โ€œBeautiful name,โ€ he remarked. โ€œIโ€™m the Doctor.โ€ Her eyes flared up with terror again, and he quickly added, โ€œNo no no no, not that kind of doctor. Please listen, whatever they did to you, Iโ€™m not like them, I promise. Trust me, I only want to help.โ€

Unsure if she believed him or not, Zepheera forced herself to relax a little and nodded to show she understood.

โ€œIโ€™m going to ask you a few more questions, Zepheera,โ€ the Doctor informed her. โ€œJust to make sure youโ€™re okay now that that nasty drugโ€™s out of your system.โ€

Zepheera slid her back against the wall until she sat with her knees hugged to her chest. โ€œOkay,โ€ she murmured. She resigned herself to his care as long as he simply seemed concerned for her. That wasnโ€™t a feeling sheโ€™d ever expected from someone his size.

As her fear slowly dissipated, curiosity began to take its place. Zepheera began to ask the Doctor questions of her own, and before long they had a back and forth going. Zepheera told the Doctor how she ended up in that lab (leaving out the details about her hidden village) and what exactly they had done to her and the few others like her. She explained that she was the only one left in that place. In return, she learned where exactly she was: inside the Doctorโ€™s TARDIS, which apparently could travel through time and space with ease.

It was the Doctorโ€™s turn to ask a question. โ€œHow old are you?โ€

Zepheera frowned, realizing that she wasnโ€™t sure. โ€œWhat day is it?โ€ She had been captured a couple months before her birthday, but she wasnโ€™t entirely sure how much time sheโ€™d spent in that lab.

The Doctor leaned forward and pressed a button on the console, causing the wall behind Zepheera to light up. She jumped and whirl around to stare at the massive screen behind her as it displayed a series of concentric circles. โ€œMay seventh, year twenty eighty-five,โ€ he recited.

Six months, she thought despondently.

โ€œI, erm. I guess that makes me a hundred and fifty-eight.โ€ Happy birthday to me.

The Doctorโ€™s brow rose as he sat back. โ€œWow. Older than you look,โ€ he mused. โ€œDo you all age so slowly?โ€

A sad smile tugged at her lips. โ€œNah, it’sโ€ฆjust me, I think.โ€ She took a steadying breath before asking, โ€œHow old are you?โ€

โ€œNine hundred and five,โ€ he replied without hesitation.

Now it was Zepheeraโ€™s turn to be surprised. โ€œSo, way older than you look.โ€

The Doctor smirked, then adopted a more thoughtful expression. โ€œZepheeraโ€ฆ Is there anything for you to go back to? A home, family, friends?โ€

Her heart stuttered at the question. As surprisingly pleasant as this man seemed, she was definitely not comfortable leading him to her people. She still had a duty to protect them until she had a full grasp of this new situation. โ€œNo,โ€ she answered evenly. โ€œNothing.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry to hear that,โ€ said the Doctor earnestly. He rubbed the back of his neck as he seemed to carefully consider his next words. โ€œWell, if youโ€™d like, you could โ€“ I mean, it would be entirely up to you, of course, butโ€ฆ I was wondering if you wanted toโ€“โ€

โ€œDoctor?โ€

Zepheeraโ€™s entire body tensed at this new voice.
